| | Welcome to Lizzie & Mary's Slug Blog! Here we'll post our own photography of slugs, snails and other interesting creatures. We hope you enjoy your visit!
With the warmer, wetter weather, the snails have finally returned! Here's a bit of an update with lots of photos!...also just added the link for the SLUGBLOG SHOP for all your slughunting needs! enjoy! . . .
This little guy in the first picture was quite amazing to watch. He started out on the wooden bench below, and crawled directly to the ashtray sitting in the garden. There was some rain water collected in the ashtray which is what I thought he was going for. But a few minutes later he stuck his head in the water and promptly began munching down on the algae in the bottom!
Snail love...
holding on... apparently they even like to eat paper! photos by Lizzie © 2007click on thumbnails below for larger image. I am definitely loving the abundance of snails here in the Netherlands! It rains almost every day here, and the mornings are cool and damp. Perfect weather for snails! Here's some interesting video I took of a snail emerging from his shell. This little guy definitely wasn't camera shy and would come out of his shell each time I picked him up and started taking pictures. photos by Lizzie © 2008
I'm excited to announce that Slugblog is indeed now an international blog! I have just moved to the Netherlands, and these are my first pictures of some Dutch snails, or "slakken" as they're known in Dutch. "Slak" is one snail, "slakken" is more than one snail. photo by Lizzie © 2007
Found this magnificent leaf bug crawling up the woodwork along my front door! Haven't seen a leaf bug in a long time! Lack of rain and cooler weather has kept the snails away but there's always something interesting to see, even when it comes knocking on your very own front door! photo by Lizzie © 2007
The other night when I came home, I spotted this creepy little guy in the parking lot perched eerily on the red no parking stripe. Obviously he wasn't paying attention. My tire miraculously had missed him by inches. At first when I saw him I didn't even think he was real! It's not quite Halloween yet, but I thought he might have been a Halloween decoration! But when I got a small twig and poked at him, he moved! Creepy! I have no confirmation as to what kind of spider it was, but after doing some research on the internet, I think she might have been a wolf spider with babies on her back. EDIT:After doing some research online, I'm now pretty sure that the above spider is actually a wolf spider and the bumps on her back are her babies! photo by Lizzie © 2007
Spotted this cute little guy outside my apartment last night. Unfortunately he was too fast and climbed up the wall. I could barely reach my camera up to snap this pic. It was a bit washed out from the flash but I managed to darken it up a bit in photoshop.

Last night as I was leaving work I spotted this little guy building two webs in the same tree. We leaned against my car and watched him for about 10 minutes as he made his intricate patterns. I'm not sure what kind of spider he is, but it's not the same as the ones mentioned in the previous entry.
This little garden spider was perched happily on his web watching the people admire his new neighbors, the long-jawed orb spiders.
This little green grasshopper landed on my windshield as we drove away from my friend's house.

This weekend we drove out to Lake Tawakoni State Park, just east of Dallas to see what all the buzz on the news has been about the huge spider webs there. Although rain storms had knocked down most of the webs by the time we got there, the little guys were busy rebuilding them so they were still quite impressive to see. Unfortunately the lighting was bad in the evening sun so the pics didn't turn out so well. The Park Rangers now believe it's the long-jawed orb spider that's building these webs. It started raining this evening so I'm sure the spider webs are being washed away as I'm posting this. But at least the snails will be out tomorrow. Below are some links with more information about the spiders:

I spotted this little coccoon this afternoon while I was clearing out my iris bed. My neighbor on that side has a butterfly garden, so I'll assume it's a refugee from across the fence. I'll be watching every day to see how things progress. All pictures unless otherwise noted are taken by Lizzie or Mary. All photos are copyrighted to Lizzie & Mary.
